Upcoming Events

2020 Virtual Class Reunions

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the on campus reunions for the classes of 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 have been postponed this year but we will be inviting all of you back for your reunions next year!

In the meantime, we are pleased to offer you a virtual reunion of your class this year. These will run on a class by class basis and will require a volunteer from each class to host the online event.

UL Alumni Week 2020

We are delighted to announce that we will host Alumni Week 2020 from 19th-23rd October to showcase a diverse range of alumni achievement around the world. We aim to deliver a programme of interviews and profiles that will be uplifting, inspiring, enlightening and inclusive.

We are once again delighted to have Bank of Ireland as headline sponsor of yet another key UL Alumni activity, with support also from Stryker Ireland. Learn more about UL Alumni Week 2020 here.

 Past Events

Class of 1980 - Virtual 40 Year Reunion 

In May 2020 we held our first ever Virtual Class Reunion. Graduates from the class of 1980 logged in from Malta, Germany, Canada, The Netherlands and the four corners of Ireland to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their graduation from UL. 

Jimmy Collins, 1980 Student's Union President, played the host for the evening and led a lively group reconnecting and reminiscing. Graduates were also joined by singer-songwriter Aileen Downes who, along with her husband Brian Birmingham captured the mood with a beautiful live performance of Bob Dylan's 'Forever Young.


UL Postgrad-Alumni Connect

As part of Post-Grad Month, UL Alumni was delighted to partner with the Postgraduate Student's Union for 'UL Postgrad Alumni Connect', an event focusing on the topic of 'Networking'. 

Current postgraduate students were joined by two postgraduate alumni speakers: Kenneth Bucholz (HR Consultant) spoke to the group on the importance of building a network, while formet international student Bikash Guha (Engineer) discussed his experience of studying at UL and building his career in Ireland after graduation.  Click here for photos.


UL Alumni New York Gathering

A special gathering of our graduates and friends took place in New York, with UL alumnus and business leader Mr John Slattery as Guest Speaker. A Corporate MBA graduate, John is President of Embraer Commercial Aviation and was recently named as president and chief executive of a new Boeing Embraer joint venture in a deal worth $5.25bn. UL Alumni’s Executive Director Majella O’Connell hosted this important evening of networking and learning at the historic Metropolitan Club.

14th Annual UL Alumni Awards

In November 2019, UL Alumni bestowed its highest honour on four of the University’s outstanding graduates at the 14th Annual UL Alumni Awards. This event celebrates the outstanding achievements of graduates and the 2019 Award Recipients were Ms Maeve Lewis, Mr Mark Sheeran, Ms Bríd Stack and the late Mr Peter Real.

Access @ 20

UL Alumni was delighted to support the Access Office in their ‘Access @ 20’ celebration and publication launch.

Speaking at the celebration, Deirdre O'Connor, Access Officer highlighted the important role of the Access Office in reducing social, educational, economic and cultural barriers to accessing and completing higher education and expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to its success. The group also heard from former access students who spoke about their own experiences and what the opportunities afforded meant to them. 


UL Alumni London Gathering

UL Alumni hosted another gathering for alumni and friends in Central London. On this occasion, Brian Shee, University Teacher in Entrepreneurship and Course Director of Essentials of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at UL spoke on the topic of ‘Entrepreneurship as a Mindset’. Brian was also joined by an alumni panel comprising graduate entrepreneurs and innovators who generously shared their experience and advice.

UL Alumni Brussels Gathering

On 3 October 2019, UL Alumni hosted a special gathering for University of Limerick graduates, former students and friends in Brussels, at the heart of the EU. Prof Brigid Laffan, alumna of the Class of 1976 (the first graduating class at UL) and Professor and Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) at the European University Institute (EUI) was guest speaker, delivering "Brexit: Ireland's English Challenge" to an engaged audience, followed by Q&A.

2019 Class Reunion Day 

On 28 September 2019, over 300 graduates returned to campus for the annual UL Alumni Class Reunion Day. Following a campus tour, returning graduates were welcomed by their relevant faculties at receptions across campus before meeting for dinner at The Pavilion and The Stables.

The milestone event of the 40 year reunion of the Class of 1979 was marked by a special reception for the class, hosted by Dr Des Fitzgerald in the President’s House on campus, following which graduates dined at the award-winning East Room restaurant in Plassey House. Despite the damp weather, returning graduates all converged in The Stables for a late night party with DJ Ber Angley. Click here for photos


UL Alumni Limerick Gathering

'UL in the City' was a special evening in June 2019 focussed on connecting and looking to the future and we were honoured to have had UL's Deputy President COO & Registrar, Mr Gerry O'Brien with us to reveal more about UL's plans for our new city centre campus.

Huge thanks again to Bank of Ireland for their steadfast support of our activities this past year and we look forward to further strengthening our network of locally-based alumni and friends as the University rolls out further ambitious plans. Click here to view photos from the evening.

UL Alumni Toronto Gathering

The arrival of Summer sunshine and ‘raptorous’ fever in the city made for a perfect gathering for UL alumni and friends in June 2019. A real mix of graduates, former international students and friends shared memories and expressed interest in what’s currently happening at our alma mater.

Sincere thanks to alumna Carmel Drumgoole and Geraldine Browne, both of whom shared with the gathering their experience of getting established in Toronto and making a contribution to their adopted city, particularly through community involvement. See photos from the evening here.


UL Alumni San Francisco Gathering

We were honoured to have John Ryan, inventor, entrepreneur and great friend of UL, as special guest speaker at our alumni gathering in San Francisco on June 5 2019, with so much learned by our audience from his incredible journey and success in Silicon Valley.

We are also grateful to the Consulate General of Ireland for their warm welcome to us for this important networking event as UL Alumni builds a community among our alumni and friends. UL Alumni Dublin Gathering

UL Alumni hosted a niche and nostalgic gathering for our Dublin-based graduates and friends in May 2019, with a talk delivered by Sociology Professor Eoin Devereux.

With the recent release of the 25th anniversary remastered edition of The Cranberries' debut album, Prof Devereux presented ‘Waltzing Back’ – an illustrated lecture on The Cranberries: 1989-1993. The talk focused on the band’s early years, which included memories of their close connection to UL. Sincere thanks to our generous sponsors Bank of Ireland. UL Alumni London Gathering

In May 2019, at a lively gathering, we married academia and popular culture with some serious/fun networking. We were delighted to bring Sociology Professor Eoin Devereux with us to deliver a talk entitled 'Sound(s) + Vision(s): The Life and Work of David Bowie' and our venue on Heddon Street, Mayfair provided the perfect venue as it was here that David Bowie shot the cover for his album ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars’.

UL Alumni New York Gathering

Our NY alumni and friends turned up in large numbers to create a vibrant gathering in the beautiful surroundings of the American Irish Historical Society and welcomed the opportunity to see Dr Mairead Moriarty launch the new MA in Global Irish Studies and do a presentation on UL’s designation as a University of Sanctuary. As Chair of UL’s Sanctuary Committee, Dr Moriarty welcomed the interested expressed by alumni and friends in supporting Sanctuary Scholarships. To end the evening, there was a mesmerizing dance performance from alumnus Andrew Vickers who had just returned to NY after a 3-month tour in Germany. UL Alumni Boston Gathering

A long-overdue return for UL Alumni to Boston was hosted recently in support of UL’s successful inaugural Irish Culture Week organised by UL’s International Education Office in March 2019.


In the middle of this week-long programme, our Gathering for Alumni & Friends took place at renowned music mecca ‘The Burren’. A thoroughly enjoyable night of conversation and music featured some legends of the local trad scene as well as our colleagues and alumni from the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. 13th Annual UL Alumni Awards

On 10 November 2018, UL Alumni bestowed its highest honour on three of the University’s outstanding graduates at the 13th Annual UL Alumni Awards.


This event celebrates the outstanding achievements of graduates of the University of Limerick and this year was no exception with the calibre of alumni honoured. They are: Business leader Niall Browne, Leading expert on European policy, Prof. Brigid Laffan, and Social Entrepreneur Michael Kelly.
